Goals: To show that direct translation doesn’t work.. Go from Japanese to English

Materials:

Preparation:

Don’t really need to do anything other than print and bring the worksheet (1 per student).

Procedure:

  1. If you want to warm up the class you can tell them the names of some Ghibli movies (See below) in English and see if they can guess the name in Japanese. (Maybe do Wasei-Warmup if you get the chance)
  2. Hand out the worksheets. Have students go over it and talk with the people around them if they please.
  3. Correct the answers.

Recurrent Events:

Going over Wasei Eigo.

(New)Vocabulary:

furious 激動した (げきどうした) inside out 裏返し(うらがえし)
tangled 絡まった (からまった) whisper 囁く(ささやく)
resident 住民 evil 悪魔(あくま)
act 演じる

Homework:

Look up the names of your favorite movies in English and share them with class next time.

Evaluation:

None to speak of.

Notes:

This activity is fairly difficult and it’s hard to pull off without groups. Here’s a few titles to help quiz the students at the beginning of class.
